Itinerary
Yogyakarta · Bromo · Ijen
A private overland journey connecting Yogyakarta with the volcanic landscapes of Mount Bromo and Ijen, ending at Ketapang Harbour for your onward journey to Bali.
From Yogyakarta to the Bromo Highlands
Meet your driver at your hotel in Yogyakarta and begin the journey east towards the Bromo highlands. The route takes you through rural Java, passing rice fields, traditional villages and changing landscapes as you travel towards East Java.
There will be opportunities to stop along the way for lunch, refreshments and photographs. The journey is a long overland transfer and the exact travel time depends on traffic and road conditions.
Arrive in the Bromo area in the afternoon and check in to your accommodation. The remainder of the day is free to relax and prepare for the early morning Bromo sunrise experience.
An early night is recommended as the following morning begins before sunrise.
Bromo Sunrise & Journey to Ijen
Depart in the early morning by 4WD Jeep towards the Bromo sunrise viewpoint. Watch the first light illuminate Mount Bromo, Mount Batok and the vast Tengger caldera.
Continue across the Sea of Sand towards Mount Bromo and walk towards the crater rim. The walk involves volcanic sand and steps and may be physically demanding. Horse riding can be arranged as an optional activity.
Return to the accommodation for breakfast and time to freshen up before checking out. Continue overland towards the Ijen area, with a stop for lunch and refreshments along the way.
Arrive in the Ijen area in the afternoon or evening and check in. Rest early in preparation for the midnight departure to Ijen Crater.
Ijen Blue Fire & Journey's End
Depart around midnight by 4WD vehicle towards the Ijen trailhead. Begin the guided night trek towards the crater rim and, subject to volcanic activity and safety regulations, descend towards the area where the famous blue fire phenomenon may be observed.
Continue towards the crater rim as daylight approaches and admire the dramatic volcanic landscape surrounding Ijen's turquoise acidic lake. Local sulfur miners may also be seen working in the area.
Descend from the crater and return to the accommodation for breakfast and time to freshen up before check-out.
Continue by private transfer to Ketapang Harbour, where the tour ends. From Ketapang, travellers can continue independently by public ferry across the Bali Strait to Gilimanuk, Bali, or arrange their onward journey from Banyuwangi.
Madakaripura Waterfall
Madakaripura Waterfall can be added to Day 1 or Day 2 where timing and weather conditions allow. The visit involves walking through a natural canyon and may be affected by rainfall and local safety conditions.
An Active Volcano Journey
This journey involves long road transfers, very early starts, walking on volcanic sand and uneven terrain, and a night trek at Ijen. The blue fire experience is not guaranteed and depends on volcanic activity, weather, park regulations and current safety conditions. The itinerary may be adjusted when necessary.
