Itinerary
Baliem Valley of Dani Tribe
A five-day cultural journey from Jayapura to the highlands of Wamena and Baliem Valley, discovering Dani traditions, villages and unique cultural heritage.
Arrival in Wamena & Local Exploration
Arrive at Sentani Airport in Jayapura and meet our local representative before continuing your flight to Wamena, the highland gateway to Baliem Valley.
After arrival and check-in, enjoy lunch at the hotel or a local restaurant. In the afternoon, explore the surroundings of Wamena, including the local market and traditional villages near the town.
Return to your accommodation in the late afternoon for dinner and rest.
Traditional Villages & Sumpaima Mummy
After breakfast, visit several traditional villages of the Dani people, an indigenous community living in the central highlands of Papua around the Wamena region.
Discover their distinctive traditions, culture and way of life before continuing to Sumpaima Village to see the traditional mummy, believed to be around 400 years old.
A lunch box and refreshments will be prepared for the journey. In the late afternoon, return to your accommodation for dinner and rest.
Dani Cooking Ceremony
After breakfast, travel by car to Obia Village, also known as Anemaugi Village, to experience one of the traditional Dani cooking ceremonies known locally as Mamajap.
The traditional cooking method uses a pit in the ground lined with hot stones. Food such as chicken, cassava, corn and vegetables is wrapped in leaves and placed over the hot stones before being covered and slowly cooked.
You may also have the opportunity to taste traditionally prepared sweet potatoes. Local Dani residents may also display traditional souvenirs for visitors.
Optional: A traditional pig feast can be arranged as an additional experience during the cooking ceremony.
Sentani Lake, Museum & Local Markets
After an early breakfast, transfer to Wamena Airport and take your flight to Sentani Airport in Jayapura.
Continue with a visit to beautiful Lake Sentani by boat, followed by the Museum of Anthropology of Cenderawasih University and Hamadi Central Market.
Browse local souvenirs before continuing to Welcome Hills, where you can enjoy beautiful views over Jayapura and the surrounding landscape.
Return to your accommodation for dinner and rest.
Departure from Papua
After breakfast, transfer to Wamena Airport for your scheduled flight and continue your journey to the next destination.
