The Sukamade Turtle Experience
Sukamade is the centrepiece of the journey. After travelling deep into the Meru Betiri landscape, join a local guide for a night walk to the beach in search of nesting sea turtles. The following morning, visit the hatchery and, when conservation conditions allow, participate in the release of young turtles.
From Volcanoes to Coastal Forest
The route crosses dramatically different environments, from the waterfalls and volcanic landscapes around Malang and Bromo to plantations, jungle tracks and the remote coastline of Sukamade.
Active, Remote & Off the Beaten Path
This is an active adventure involving early mornings, walking, jeep journeys and long drives on rough roads. The Sukamade section is deliberately simple and authentic, with basic accommodation close to the conservation area.

Road conditions around Sukamade are rough and the journey includes bumpy jeep rides, river crossings and walking. Turtle sightings are a natural wildlife experience and cannot be guaranteed. The itinerary may be adjusted according to weather, conservation conditions and local circumstances.

Itinerary
Malang to Sukamade Turtle Adventure
A five-day private adventure from Malang through Tumpak Sewu, Mount Bromo, Kalibaru and Sukamade before crossing to Bali via Gilimanuk.
Tumpak Sewu Waterfall & Bromo
At approximately 08:00, depart from your accommodation or Malang railway station towards Lumajang. Visit Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and hike towards the waterfall with a local guide. After exploring the area, continue by road towards Bromo, a journey of approximately four hours. Check in at your accommodation near Mount Bromo and prepare for the early morning experience.
Bromo Sunrise & Rural East Java
Around 03:00, depart by jeep to the sunrise viewpoint. After sunrise, continue across the volcanic sand plain towards Mount Bromo. Continue to the crater on foot or by optional horse ride before returning to the accommodation for breakfast and a shower.
After check-out, continue towards Kalibaru, a small rural town surrounded by plantations and countryside. Check in at the accommodation and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.
Jungle Tracks & Night Turtle Watching
After breakfast, continue by jeep towards Sukamade. The approximately five-hour journey passes traditional villages, rice fields, plantations, jungle and rivers. Stop at a traditional palm-sugar production site and enjoy the viewpoint towards Green Bay before continuing into the remote Sukamade area.
Arrive at the basic local accommodation and take time to recover from the long, bumpy journey. After dinner, around 20:00, join a local guide for a night walk to Sukamade Beach to look for nesting sea turtles. Wildlife activity is unpredictable, so patience is part of the experience.
Turtle Hatchery & Release
Start early at approximately 06:00 with a visit to the turtle hatchery. Learn how eggs and young turtles are cared for before accompanying the conservation team to the beach. When conditions allow, participate in the release of baby turtles while following the instructions of the local guide.
Return to the accommodation for breakfast and a shower before continuing by jeep towards Banyuwangi. The approximately four-hour journey crosses jungle tracks, rivers and rough dirt roads. Arrive in Banyuwangi, check in and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.
Ferry Crossing to Bali
After breakfast and check-out, transfer to Ketapang Harbour and board the ferry to Gilimanuk in Bali. The crossing takes approximately one hour. After arriving in Gilimanuk, continue your journey independently to your next destination in Bali.
Remote Roads & Wildlife Conditions
The Sukamade section involves rough roads, river crossings and basic facilities. Turtle nesting and hatchling release are natural conservation activities and cannot be guaranteed. Timing may change according to weather, road conditions and local conservation procedures.
