Flores is a culturally diverse island where traditional communities, local beliefs, Catholic traditions and distinctive forms of art and architecture have developed across different regions. The island is home to several cultural communities, including the Manggarai, Ngada, Ende, Lio and Sikka peoples, each with their own languages, ceremonies, traditional houses, weaving traditions and ways of life.

In western Flores, the Manggarai people are known for their distinctive cultural traditions and traditional architecture. The remote village of Wae Rebo is one of the most remarkable examples, with its iconic conical Mbaru Niang houses surrounded by the mountains and forests of Manggarai. The village has received international recognition for its efforts to preserve traditional architecture and community-based heritage.

Further east, the cultural landscape changes as travelers reach the highlands around Bajawa and Ngada. Traditional villages such as Bena provide an opportunity to see distinctive traditional houses, ancestral symbols and megalithic elements that remain part of local cultural life. Around Ende and the Lio region, traditional ceremonies, weaving and ancestral traditions continue to form an important part of community identity.

Flores is also shaped by its volcanic geography. The island's mountains, highlands, crater lakes and coastal landscapes have influenced settlement, agriculture and local traditions for generations. One of its most extraordinary natural landmarks is Kelimutu, where three volcanic crater lakes occupy the summit of Mount Kelimutu and are traditionally associated with the resting place of departed souls. The lakes are famous for their changing colours and form part of Kelimutu National Park.

In the west, Flores is closely connected with the extraordinary natural heritage of Komodo National Park. The park encompasses Komodo, Rinca, Padar and numerous smaller islands and is internationally recognized for its unique wildlife and marine ecosystems. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
