Arrival in Makassar

Upon arrival at Ujung Pandang Airport, your private driver will meet you and accompany you directly to the hotel for check-in. The remainder of the day is free to relax or explore Makassar at your own pace. As the capital of South Sulawesi, Makassar serves as an important gateway to the eastern Indonesian islands and offers a fascinating blend of maritime heritage, local culture and colonial history.

Makassar & Coral Island

After breakfast, enjoy a boat excursion to a small coral island before continuing with a city exploration of Makassar. Visit Paotere Harbour, where traditional phinisi sailing vessels have been part of the city's maritime identity for centuries. Continue to Fort Rotterdam, a historic landmark reflecting Makassar's rich past and Dutch colonial heritage.

Maros Karst & Ancient Landscapes

Travel into the spectacular Maros karst region and Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park. Walk through rice fields, traditional Bugis villages and dramatic limestone landscapes before visiting a cave containing prehistoric paintings. Along the way, enjoy tea in a traditional house and continue by canoe or small boat through a narrow river before arriving in Maros.

Into the Highlands of Mamasa

Continue your journey towards the remote highlands of Mamasa, travelling through changing landscapes along the western side of Sulawesi. Mamasa is one of the quieter and less-visited regions of Torajaland, surrounded by mountains, forests and rural landscapes. Upon arrival, settle into your accommodation and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this authentic highland destination.

Discovering Mamasa

Explore the beautiful countryside of Mamasa on foot, where rice fields alternate with reddish earth, forests and green hills. Discover an ancient traditional burial site featuring wooden tombs carved in the shape of buffaloes. Continue to the authentic villages of Banwa Sura, Orobua and Buntu Kasis, where local communities offer a genuine glimpse into traditional life.

From Mamasa to Torajaland

After breakfast, travel along a scenic inland route towards Rantepao and the mountainous district of Tana Toraja, homeland of the Toraja people. The region is renowned for its distinctive traditional houses, ancestral customs and elaborate funeral traditions. As you enter Torajaland, the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous and culturally distinctive.

The Heritage of Torajaland

Explore Torajaland with a local guide and visit some of the region's most important traditional villages. Discover Kete Kesu and its distinctive tongkonan houses before learning about traditional Toraja burial customs. Visit the dramatic cliffside tombs of Lemo and Londa, where carved stone graves are watched over by tau tau wooden effigies.

Walking Through Torajaland

After breakfast, enjoy a walking tour through traditional Toraja villages surrounded by mountains, rice terraces and bamboo forests. The walk takes approximately 5–6 hours and provides an authentic perspective on rural Toraja life. Tonight, experience a traditional Toraja house or local homestay, offering a closer connection with the local community and its traditions.

Cycling Through Toraja Villages

After a simple breakfast, explore the countryside by bicycle, cycling through traditional villages and surrounding landscapes. If a local ceremony or buffalo market is taking place, the route can be adjusted to include these experiences. This active experience provides another perspective on the daily life and scenery of Torajaland.

Lake Tempe & Silk Traditions

Travel towards Sengkang via Palopo. In the afternoon, explore Lake Tempe by traditional motorised canoe, an important wetland area rich in birdlife. Discover floating houses and local communities living on the lake before observing the traditional process of silk weaving, an important part of Sengkang's cultural heritage.

Into the Highlands of Malino

Continue into the cool highlands of Malino, located on the lower slopes of Mount Bawakaraeng. Along the way, stop at Tanaberu village to discover its traditional boat-building yards. Continue to Patapang village and enjoy a scenic walk through the surrounding tea plantations before arriving in Malino.

Malino Nature & Cycling Experience

Enjoy a gentle walk through rice fields, traditional villages and waterfalls surrounded by lush mountain scenery. For a more adventurous experience, take a mountain bike downhill through traditional villages and rice fields, passing streams and waterfalls along the way. Encounters with local communities add an authentic dimension to this active day.

The Kajang People & Journey to Bira

Continue towards Bira with a visit to Tana Toa, the traditional homeland of the Kajang people. Discover their close relationship with nature and their traditional way of life, including locally produced food, wooden houses and handwoven textiles. Visitors are required to wear black clothing and walk approximately 30 minutes barefoot to reach the village before continuing towards Bira.

Bira Beach & Coastal Life

Enjoy a free day to explore Bira and its surroundings at your own pace, either on foot or by bicycle or motorbike. Discover the local traditions of fishing, traditional boat building and colourful textile weaving. Bira's clear waters and beautiful white sandy beaches also provide an opportunity for a relaxing day by the coast or a morning snorkelling excursion.

Return to Makassar

Today you travel back to Makassar. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for check-in. The remainder of the day is free to relax, enjoy the city or take some final time to reflect on your journey through Sulawesi.

Farewell to Sulawesi

After breakfast, enjoy your final moments in Makassar. At the agreed time, your private driver will transfer you to Ujung Pandang Airport for your onward flight home or to continue your journey to another Indonesian island.
