Around Lake Toba and Samosir Island, the journey introduces the cultural landscape of the Batak people through traditional villages, distinctive architecture, local traditions and the dramatic setting of the volcanic lake.
Expect an extraordinary variety of landscapes, from tropical rainforest and river valleys to volcanic highlands, waterfalls and the vast caldera landscape of Lake Toba.

Itinerary
Sumatra Overland Journey
Gateway to the Rainforest
Arrive at Kuala Namu International Airport and begin the overland journey towards Bukit Lawang, the gateway to the Gunung Leuser rainforest. The route gradually changes from the urban surroundings of Medan to rural landscapes, plantations and river valleys. Arrive in Bukit Lawang and settle into the peaceful riverside environment before your rainforest experience begins.
Orangutans & Highland Landscapes
Enter the rainforest around Bukit Lawang for a guided jungle experience where Sumatran wildlife can be encountered in its natural environment. The forest is home to orangutans and a wide variety of other tropical species. After the jungle experience, continue towards the cooler highlands of Berastagi, with the landscape changing to mountain scenery and agricultural areas.
Volcanic Landscapes & Lake Toba
Continue through the Karo highlands towards Lake Toba, one of Sumatra's defining natural landscapes. Along the way, the programme may include scenic viewpoints and the impressive Sipiso-piso waterfall, subject to the confirmed itinerary. Continue towards the lake and cross by ferry to Samosir Island, situated within the great volcanic caldera.
Batak Country & The Southern Route
Leave Samosir and continue overland towards Padang Sidempuan. The route travels through the interior of Sumatra, passing changing mountain scenery, traditional settlements and agricultural landscapes. This is one of the longer travelling days of the journey and provides an opportunity to experience the quieter side of the island away from its principal tourist centres.
Crossing into West Sumatra
Continue south towards West Sumatra through mountain roads, valleys and traditional rural landscapes. The journey gradually approaches the Minangkabau cultural region, with the scenery becoming increasingly mountainous. Arrive in Bukittinggi and enjoy time to settle into the highland atmosphere.
Minangkabau Heritage & Bukittinggi
Explore Bukittinggi and its cultural and historical landmarks. Discover the atmosphere around Jam Gadang, explore the local market areas and experience the dramatic landscape of Ngarai Sianok. The day provides a contrasting cultural perspective after the Batak heritage experienced around Lake Toba.
Highland Views & Lake Landscapes
Travel through the highlands surrounding Bukittinggi towards Lake Maninjau. The journey offers sweeping views over mountain valleys and the lake landscape, with the famous winding roads providing one of the region's characteristic scenic experiences. Return to Bukittinggi after exploring the surrounding countryside.
Minangkabau Landscapes to the West Coast
Leave Bukittinggi and continue towards Padang through the green landscapes of West Sumatra. Depending on the confirmed programme, the route may include cultural or scenic stops such as traditional Minangkabau heritage sites and the Harau or Anai Valley areas. Arrive in Padang and enjoy the final evening of the journey.
Departure from West Sumatra
Enjoy the final moments in Padang before your transfer to Minangkabau International Airport for your onward journey. Depending on the confirmed departure time, there may be an opportunity for a short final city or coastal visit before the tour concludes.
