Your journey begins in Timika before continuing to Ewer and onward to Agats by boat. Several days are dedicated to the Asmat Festival and cultural immersion, followed by boat excursions to local villages. After returning to Timika, the expedition concludes with a visit to Kuala Kencana before your departure.

ITINERARY · 8 DAYS / 7 NIGHTS · ASMAT FESTIVAL

Asmat Festival Cultural Expedition

Eight days of cultural immersion, river journeys and village encounters in the remote Asmat region of Papua.

DAY 1 · TIMIKA – EWER – AGATS

Arrival in Timika & Journey to Agats

Arrive in Timika in the morning and continue by connecting flight to Ewer, the gateway to the Asmat region.

From Ewer, continue by motorbike to the harbour while your luggage is transported separately. From the harbour, travel by small motorized boat for approximately 30 minutes to Agats, the capital of Asmat Regency.

After checking in, explore Agats and its distinctive network of elevated wooden walkways built across the wetland environment. Return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

DAY 2 · ASMAT FESTIVAL

Opening Ceremony & Traditional Arts

After breakfast, attend the official opening ceremony of the Asmat Festival.

Experience traditional dances, music performances, ceremonial canoe displays, sago processing demonstrations and the distinctive woodcarving traditions of the Asmat people. After the festival programme, return to your accommodation. The remainder of the day is free for personal activities and relaxation.

DAY 3 · CULTURAL IMMERSION

Sago, Fishing & Asmat Craftsmanship

Continue participating in the Asmat Festival while discovering important aspects of traditional Asmat life.

Observe traditional sago processing, one of the region's important food traditions, and learn about other local food practices. Depending on the programme, there may also be opportunities to experience traditional fishing and shrimp catching with local communities.

Continue exploring Asmat artistic traditions and the techniques behind its renowned woodcarving. Lunch and dinner are served at a local restaurant or your accommodation.

DAY 4 · RIVER & VILLAGE

Beriten Village & Festival Activities

After breakfast, travel by boat to Beriten Village, home to the Safan sub-clan of the Asmat people.

Explore the village and observe local traditions and daily life. Enjoy a packed lunch in the village before returning to Agats through the smaller river canals.

Arrive back in Agats around midday and continue with the Asmat Festival programme. Dinner at a local restaurant followed by overnight at the accommodation.

DAY 5 · VILLAGE EXPLORATION

Yaun Jufri Village & Festival

After breakfast, take another boat journey to Yaun Jufri Village, associated with the Joerat sub-clan of the Asmat people.

Explore the village and discover its local environment, traditions and way of life.

Return to Agats in the afternoon and continue enjoying the Asmat Festival activities. Dinner at a local restaurant and overnight in Agats.

DAY 6 · ASMAT FESTIVAL

Festival Finale & Closing Ceremony

Enjoy the final day of the Asmat Festival and attend the official closing ceremony. Take time to appreciate the traditional performances, artistic expressions and cultural celebrations before concluding your time in Agats.

DAY 7 · AGATS – TIMIKA

Return to Timika & Kuala Kencana

Transfer to Ewer Airport and fly back to Timika. After arrival, continue to Kuala Kencana, a planned township situated within a forest environment.

Explore the area and its combination of forest, residential areas and public facilities before continuing to your accommodation in Timika for the night.

DAY 8 · DEPARTURE

Timika Airport

After breakfast, transfer to Timika Airport for your onward flight. End of the Asmat Festival Cultural Expedition.
