A Rare Turtle Encounter
The highlight of the journey takes place at Sukamade, where sea turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. The experience is conducted with local guides and conservation staff, followed by a morning visit to the hatchery and an opportunity to release young turtles into the sea.
From Waterfall to Volcano
The route crosses several distinct landscapes of East Java, from the immense cliffs and waterfall of Tumpak Sewu to Bromo's volcanic caldera, plantation country around Kalibaru, the forests of Meru Betiri and the high volcanic terrain surrounding Ijen.
Active, Early & Off the Beaten Path
This is an active journey with early departures, long overland drives, jeep rides on rough roads, walking and volcanic trekking. The remote sections around Sukamade are intentionally simple and adventurous rather than luxurious.

A Physically Active Journey
Expect very early mornings, uneven terrain, long drives and a demanding trek at Ijen. The road to Sukamade includes jungle tracks, river crossings and bumpy sections. The turtle observation is a natural wildlife experience, so sightings and nesting activity cannot be guaranteed.

Itinerary
Java to Bali Wild Nature Adventure
A six-day private overland journey from Malang to Bali through waterfalls, volcanoes, plantations, jungle and the remote turtle conservation area of Sukamade.
Waterfall Adventure & Bromo
At approximately 08:00, depart from your accommodation or Malang railway station towards Lumajang. Visit Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and walk to the viewpoint and lower waterfall area with a local guide. After exploring the waterfall, continue by road towards the Bromo area, a journey of approximately four hours. Check in at your accommodation near Mount Bromo and prepare for the early start the following morning.
Bromo Sunrise & Plantation Country
Around 03:00, depart by jeep for the Bromo sunrise viewpoint. After sunrise, continue across the volcanic sand sea towards Mount Bromo. Walk or ride a horse towards the crater before returning to the accommodation for breakfast and a shower. After check-out, continue towards Kalibaru, a small plantation town surrounded by rural landscapes. Check in and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.
Jungle Journey & Turtle Watching
After breakfast, continue by jeep towards Sukamade. The approximately five-hour journey passes traditional villages, rice fields, plantations, jungle and river crossings. Stop at a traditional palm-sugar production site and enjoy the viewpoint towards Green Bay before continuing into the remote Meru Betiri landscape. Arrive at Sukamade, check in to the basic local accommodation and prepare for the evening wildlife experience.
Around 20:00, join a local guide for a night walk to Sukamade Beach in search of nesting sea turtles. The experience depends on natural wildlife activity and may require patience. Return to the accommodation after the observation.
Turtle Hatchery & Release
Start early at approximately 06:00 with a visit to the turtle hatchery. Learn how turtle eggs and hatchlings are cared for before accompanying the conservation team to the beach for the release of young turtles. Follow the instructions of the local guide to ensure the animals are handled responsibly.
Return to the accommodation for breakfast and a shower before continuing by jeep towards Banyuwangi. The approximately four-hour drive crosses jungle tracks, rivers and rough roads. Upon arrival, check in and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.
Free Day in Banyuwangi
Enjoy a free day in Banyuwangi to rest after the demanding Sukamade adventure. Relax at the accommodation or explore the surrounding area independently. Prepare for the early departure to Ijen after midnight.
Ijen Crater & Crossing to Bali
Around 01:00, depart by jeep towards the base of Mount Ijen. With a local guide, begin the approximately two-hour climb towards the crater. Experience the dramatic volcanic landscape and, when conditions permit, observe the famous blue fire phenomenon before descending to the jeep.
Return to Banyuwangi between approximately 08:00 and 09:00 for breakfast and a shower. Afterwards, transfer to Ketapang Harbour and cross by ferry to Gilimanuk in Bali. The ferry crossing takes approximately one hour. Arrive in Bali around midday and continue independently to your next destination.
Early Starts & Rough Terrain
This journey includes several early departures and physically demanding activities. Road conditions around Sukamade can be rough, while the Ijen experience requires a substantial uphill walk. Weather, volcanic conditions, road conditions and wildlife activity may affect the exact program.
