Itinerary
Into the Rainforest of North Sumatra
An active journey from Medan into the rainforest landscapes of Tangkahan and Bukit Lawang, combining elephant encounters, river adventures, village life and an overnight jungle trek.
Arrival & Welcome to North Sumatra
Upon arrival at Kualanamu International Airport, meet your private driver and begin your journey in North Sumatra. Transfer to your hotel in Medan for check-in and settle into your accommodation. The remainder of the day is free to relax and recover from your journey.
Into the Rainforest & Elephant Experience
After breakfast, depart Medan for Tangkahan, travelling through the changing landscapes of North Sumatra. After lunch, begin a jungle trek accompanied by a local guide and continue towards the elephant bathing area. Experience the Sumatran elephants as they bathe in the river before transferring to your rainforest accommodation.
River Tubing & Jeep Safari
Begin the day with a tubing adventure on the Buluh River. Along the route, discover a waterfall and natural hot spring before continuing towards the river estuary and enjoying lunch in the natural surroundings. In the afternoon, travel by jeep towards Bukit Lawang through remote dirt roads, villages and wilderness landscapes before arriving at your accommodation.
Village Life, Plantations & Bat Cave
Explore the countryside around Bukit Lawang by traditional tuk-tuk, travelling through rice fields, plantations and local villages. Discover traditional production of brown sugar, tofu and tempeh before continuing to the Bat Cave for an exploration of its underground environment. Return to your accommodation and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.
Jungle Trekking & Overnight Camp
Meet your local jungle guide and begin your trek into the Gunung Leuser rainforest. Walk through dense tropical forest while learning about its flora and fauna, with opportunities to observe orangutans, hornbills and other rainforest wildlife. Continue towards the jungle camp beside the river, where dinner is prepared around the campfire and the night is spent in a simple rainforest shelter.
Morning Jungle & Traditional River Rafting
Wake to the sounds of the rainforest and enjoy a morning coffee or tea before continuing deeper along the jungle trails. After several hours of trekking and a stop at a scenic waterfall, enjoy lunch before beginning the return journey by traditional tube rafting. Arrive back in Bukit Lawang and spend the remainder of the day at leisure.
Return to Medan
After breakfast, check out and begin the journey back to Medan. Along the way, make stops for lunch, short breaks and photographs as the rainforest and rural landscapes gradually give way to the city. Upon arrival in Medan, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.
Farewell to Sumatra
At your preferred departure time, transfer to Kualanamu International Airport for your onward flight home or continuation to another destination in Indonesia. Your North Sumatra rainforest adventure comes to an end with the journey back from Medan.
