Komodo National Park

Culture and history info

The islands of Komodo and the surrounding region have long been home to coastal communities whose lives have been closely connected to the sea. Fishing, traditional navigation and trade between islands have shaped the cultural landscape of the region for generations. The people living around the park include communities with diverse backgrounds, including Bajau, Bugis, Manggarai and other eastern Indonesian communities.

The name Komodo has become internationally associated with the Komodo dragon, the world's largest living lizard and a species found naturally only in this part of Indonesia. The species became the focus of scientific interest during the early twentieth century and later became the symbol of a broader conservation effort to protect the islands and their unique ecosystems.

Komodo National Park was officially established in 1980 and was subsequently expanded to include a much larger marine area and part of western Flores. In 1991, the park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its exceptional natural landscapes, unique wildlife and globally important terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

The park is not only a sanctuary for Komodo dragons. Its dry forests and savannahs provide habitat for deer, wild pigs, macaques and numerous bird species, while the surrounding waters support extensive coral reefs and a remarkable diversity of marine life. UNESCO identifies sea turtles, dolphins, dugongs and whales among the notable marine species found in the wider park ecosystem.

Today, Komodo National Park represents an important meeting point between conservation and tourism. Responsible travel plays an increasingly important role in allowing visitors to experience the park while protecting its wildlife, marine ecosystems and exceptional landscapes for future generations.
