Bali’s Online Taxi Rivalry Heats Up

(Bali, Indonesia) – The conflict between online and conventional taxi drivers in Bali has flared up again, creating tension that not only affects the drivers, but also affects the tourism industry on the Island of the Gods.

The tension is fuelled by unfair competition that has intensified in recent years. Conventional taxi drivers feel that the presence of online taxis has eroded their income due to cheaper fares and ease of booking through apps. On the other hand, online taxi drivers complain about the ban on operating in certain areas, which often leads to direct confrontations on the ground.

Some incidents have even led to acts of violence and intimidation against online taxi drivers. Travellers are often caught in an uncomfortable situation, with limited access to transportation in some tourist spots due to the ban on online taxi services by conventional driver groups. This has resulted in a poor travel experience for both domestic and foreign tourists, damaging Bali’s image as a world-class tourist destination.

The local government has attempted to find a solution by organising mediation between the two parties. However, to date, regulations that accommodate the interests of both parties remain a challenge. In the midst of this condition, tourism industry players are urging the government to take concrete steps to prevent further impact on Bali’s main economic sector.

If it is not resolved soon, tourist arrivals are likely to decline, which in turn will affect local revenues and the welfare of local communities who depend on the tourism sector for their livelihoods.

The public also hopes for fair regulations and solutions that can accommodate the interests of all parties so that transportation in Bali can run smoothly without sacrificing the image of Indonesian tourism.
