Itinerary
Mahakam River & Kutai Orangutan Wildlife Expedition
A five-day private expedition through the rainforest and waterways of East Kalimantan, combining wildlife exploration in Kutai National Park with river journeys and cultural encounters along the Mahakam River.
Overland Journey & Night Rainforest Trek
Your expedition begins with a morning pick-up in Balikpapan and an overland journey towards Sangatta via Samarinda and Bontang. The route takes approximately eight to nine hours before continuing by motorized canoe to the accommodation area inside Kutai National Park. After settling in and dinner, join an evening trek in the surrounding rainforest and begin your introduction to the wildlife of Kutai.
Orangutan Trekking & Rainforest Exploration
Begin with an early morning trek before breakfast, when orangutans may be active as they leave their nests. Continue exploring the rainforest before returning to the ranger camp for breakfast and rest. After lunch, venture into the forest again for an afternoon exploration, followed after dinner by a night walk in search of nocturnal species.
From Rainforest to the Mahakam River
After breakfast, leave Kutai National Park and travel back towards Sangatta before continuing overland to Kota Bangun. The journey takes approximately eight to nine hours before you board a motorized canoe and enter the Mahakam River region. Continue towards Muara Muntai, a traditional wooden riverside village, where you settle into your local guest house.
Jempang Lake, Wildlife & Traditional Culture
Explore Muara Muntai after breakfast before continuing by motorized canoe towards Jempang Lake via Jantur Village. Along the waterways, watch for proboscis monkeys, snakes, kingfishers and other bird species. Continue to Mancong Village for a traditional dance welcome before proceeding to Tanjung Isuy, then return by canoe to Muara Muntai for the evening.
Final Canoe Journey & Return to Balikpapan
Enjoy breakfast at the guest house before taking a motorized canoe transfer to Kota Bangun. From there, continue overland towards Tenggarong and Balikpapan, completing the transition from the remote Mahakam waterways back to the city. Upon arrival in Balikpapan, transfer to your hotel or airport according to your onward travel arrangements.

This programme involves long overland journeys, rainforest trekking, motorized canoe travel and simple accommodation. Journey times may vary according to road, river and weather conditions. Wildlife encounters are naturally unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed.
