Flores is a culturally diverse island where traditional communities, local beliefs, Catholic traditions and distinctive forms of art and architecture have developed across different regions. The island is home to several cultural communities, including the Manggarai, Ngada, Ende, Lio and Sikka peoples, each with their own languages, ceremonies, traditional houses, weaving traditions and ways of life.

In western Flores, the Manggarai people are known for their distinctive cultural traditions and traditional architecture. The remote village of Wae Rebo is one of the most remarkable examples, with its iconic conical Mbaru Niang houses surrounded by the mountains and forests of Manggarai.
