Start in Medan before heading into the rainforest landscapes of Tangkahan and Bukit Lawang. Continue through the volcanic highlands around Berastagi and onwards to Samosir Island on Lake Toba, combining nature, wildlife and cultural encounters throughout the journey.

Into the Leuser Rainforest
The journey includes guided exploration through dense rainforest around Bukit Lawang and the Leuser ecosystem. Wildlife encounters are possible in their natural environment, while experienced local guides provide insight into the forest and its flora and fauna.
Batak Heritage & Rural Life
Beyond the rainforest, discover the cultural landscapes around Lake Toba and Samosir Island. Traditional villages, Batak performances, local architecture and everyday community life provide a different perspective on North Sumatra.
Trekking, Rivers & Mountain Roads
This is an active journey involving jungle trekking, uneven terrain, river activities and long overland transfers. The jungle section includes an overnight camp and requires a reasonable level of fitness and an adventurous spirit.
Nature Comes First
Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, as animals are encountered in their natural habitat. Jungle conditions, weather and river levels can also affect activities and daily schedules. The overnight jungle experience is intentionally simple and close to nature.

Itinerary
Sumatra Wildlife & Cultural Journey
From Medan to the rainforests of Leuser and the shores of Lake Toba, this 11-day journey combines wildlife, jungle trekking, highland landscapes and Batak cultural experiences.
Arrival in Medan
Upon arrival at Kualanamu Airport, meet your private driver who will accompany you throughout the journey in Sumatra. Transfer to the hotel for check-in. The remainder of the day is free at leisure.
Medan Heritage & Tangkahan
After breakfast, visit Maimun Palace followed by Gedung London and other historic buildings from the Dutch colonial era. Continue towards Tangkahan, with stops along the way for lunch and photographs of the surrounding scenery. Upon arrival, enjoy the natural surroundings and the opportunity to meet local people in the village.
Elephant Camp & Jeep Safari
At 09:00, meet your local guide and visit the elephant camp to watch Sumatran elephants bathing in the river. You may also take part in washing and scrubbing the elephants. Continue by jeep towards Bukit Lawang, stopping along the way to enjoy the scenery and observe village life.
The jeep journey takes approximately 2.5 hours over wilderness tracks and bumpy dirt roads, arriving in Bukit Lawang at around 16:00.
Jungle Trekking & Overnight Camp
At 09:00, meet your local Leuser National Park guide and begin your jungle trek through dense rainforest. Along the way, learn about the forest's flora and fauna, including mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects and butterflies.
Enjoy the fresh water of the Bahorok River and relax along the river while observing the surrounding rainforest and butterflies. Orangutans and large birds such as hornbills may also be encountered.
Your guide will prepare lunch, including nasi goreng and fruit from the local market. Around 16:00, reach the jungle camp where you can relax, enjoy coffee or tea and swim in the river. Dinner is prepared over a campfire, followed by games and other activities.
Overnight in a simple tent made from bamboo and plastic sheeting, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.
Waterfall & River Tubing
Wake up to the sounds of the jungle and begin the morning with coffee or tea and breakfast. Continue the trek for several more hours, stopping at a beautiful waterfall along the way. After lunch, return to Bukit Lawang by traditional tube rafting along the river. Transfer to your accommodation and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.
Highland Journey & Volcano Views
After breakfast and check-out, continue towards the highlands of Berastagi. Travel through palm oil and rubber plantations before visiting a coffee plantation. Continue to Gundaling Hill for views towards the active volcanoes of Mount Sibayak and Mount Sinabung. Check in to your accommodation in Berastagi.
Sipiso-Piso Waterfall & Lake Toba
After breakfast, visit the local fruit market before continuing towards Parapat. Stop at the approximately 110-metre-high Sipiso-Piso Waterfall for photographs. From Parapat harbour, cross Lake Toba by ferry to Samosir Island, a journey of approximately one hour. Continue to your accommodation upon arrival.
Batak Culture & Ambarita Village
After breakfast, explore the cultural heritage of Samosir Island, including historical sites associated with the Batak people and their traditional customs. Continue to Ambarita Village to attend a traditional Batak multi-dance performance beginning at 10:30 and lasting approximately one hour. Afterwards, see the traditional stone chairs before returning to your accommodation.
Free Day on Samosir
Enjoy a free day to explore Samosir Island at your own pace. You may rent a moped or bicycle to explore the area around Tuk-Tuk Village, enjoy a culinary experience or simply relax and enjoy the surroundings of your accommodation.
Return to Medan
Cross back to the mainland and continue the journey towards Medan. Along the way, pass through the historic town of Pematang Siantar. Upon arrival in Medan, transfer to your hotel for check-in.
Departure from Medan
At your desired departure time, you will be picked up and transferred to Kualanamu Airport for your onward flight home or continuation to another destination.
Active Jungle Experience
The jungle section involves trekking through dense rainforest, uneven terrain and an overnight stay in a simple camp. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Weather and local conditions may affect the timing or operation of outdoor activities.
