Culture and history info
Lombok has a distinctive cultural identity shaped primarily by the Sasak people, the island’s largest indigenous community. Sasak traditions can be experienced through traditional villages, architecture, weaving, music, dance, ceremonies and everyday community life. Across Lombok, these traditions continue to form an important part of the island’s identity alongside Islamic practices and other cultural influences.
Traditional villages such as Sade and Ende in Central Lombok offer visitors an opportunity to discover Sasak architecture, local customs and traditional crafts. The village of Sukarara is particularly known for its traditional weaving, where generations of Sasak women have preserved techniques and patterns passed down through the community. Traditional textiles are not simply souvenirs but an important expression of local identity and cultural knowledge.
Lombok’s history has also been shaped by interactions with neighbouring Bali and other regional kingdoms. Mataram and Cakranegara preserve traces of this history, including Taman Mayura and other cultural and architectural sites reflecting centuries of interaction between Sasak and Balinese communities.
Mount Rinjani occupies an important place in both the natural and cultural landscape of Lombok. Rising to 3,726 metres, the volcano dominates the northern part of the island and contains the spectacular Segara Anak crater lake. The mountain has spiritual significance for local communities and remains associated with traditional rituals and pilgrimage. The Rinjani-Lombok area was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2018, recognizing the connection between its biodiversity, landscape and local communities.
In the south, the cultural identity of Mandalika is connected with the famous legend of Princess Mandalika. The story continues to inspire the annual Bau Nyale tradition, when local communities gather along the coast to collect sea worms believed to represent the princess. Today, Mandalika combines this living cultural heritage with beaches, resorts, wellness experiences and international motorsport, creating a distinctive meeting point between traditional Lombok and contemporary tourism.
